Wi-Fi Home Automation System
Smart switches, dimmers, outlets, sensors, and controllers — hubless Wi-Fi operation with local and cloud control and OTA firmware.
Read the StoryProblem Statement
The cheapest path to a connected home is plain Wi-Fi — but plain Wi-Fi is also where customers feel the worst reliability. Apps that depend on a round-trip through the cloud feel sluggish; devices that ignore the LAN go dark every time the broadband drops. Indian OEMs needed a Wi-Fi platform that behaves as if there is a hub, without making the customer buy one.
We were briefed to ship a complete portfolio — switches, dimmers, outlets, fans, curtain controllers — that could be installed by a regular electrician and updated for the lifetime of the building.
Planning
We standardised on a single Wi-Fi SoC family and built a hubless control plane that lets devices on the same LAN talk to each other directly. A scene fired from the wall switch reaches the bulb in under 80 ms even if the home router cannot reach the internet.
The cloud layer handles remote access, voice integration, and a per-device OTA channel scoped by SKU and firmware version. Provisioning was reduced to a single QR scan in the OEM's app — there is no SoftAP dance.
Testing
We characterised every SKU against a reference set of consumer-grade routers (TP-Link, Netgear, JioFiber CPEs, BSNL ONTs), tracking association time, roaming behaviour, and steady-state CPU on the SoC. Heat tests covered both the 220 V switching electronics and the radio under continuous control traffic, since dimmers run hot in summer ambient.
A regression suite of three thousand scripted scenes runs against pre-release firmware in a 16-device lab before any OTA push.
Production
The platform is deployed by multiple Indian OEMs at retail where DSPWorks is responsible for design upgrades, quality manufacturing and box build.
A managed OTA service backs every device shipped — long after the original engineering team has moved on, the field receives security and stability updates from us.
