A typical induction-motor ceiling fan in India draws 75 W for the same airflow that a brushless motor delivers at under 30 W. Multiplied across a billion fans, the loss is national. The BLDC market was catching up and we joined the bandwagon to supply to end customers as well as OEMs.
We wanted a fan that an electrician could install without thinking, that cost the same as a mid-tier conventional fan over a three-year window, and that proudly read Made in India on the canopy.
Planning
We owned the design end-to-end: aerodynamic blade profile, motor stator, controller PCB, remote, and the moulded canopy. The motor was tuned for the 230 V single-phase Indian grid with deliberate margin for the brownouts that conventional fan electronics ignore. Sensorless field-oriented control replaced the imported Hall-sensor approach, removing a failure mode and a cost line at once. The fans were in two variants - regular and smart-phone controlled.
The IR remote has photoluminescent keypad to make it convenient to operate in dark.
Testing
Aerodynamic testing happened in a calibrated wind-tunnel cell to the BIS measurement procedure. Electrical type tests covered surge immunity to IEC 61000-4-5 (because Indian power lines do see the kilovolt-class transients the standard talks about), thermal endurance at 50 °C ambient, and a 5,000-hour life test on the motor and controller.
Acoustic tests — often skipped in this category — were a deliberate priority. The Vāyu fan had to be quiet at full speed, not just at low speeds where benchmarks are typically published.
Production
Vāyu is sold direct-to-consumer and through select distributors as DSPWorks' own brand — Desh Ki Hawa.
A three-year warranty is backed by a national service contract — the customer is not chasing imports for a replacement controller years down the line.
