Matter promised one app for every smart device, but the certification path is steep — a hardware team that has never shipped to CSA can spend a year on documentation alone. Indian OEMs wanted to ride the Matter wave without standing up an embedded RF group of their own.
The brief was to deliver Matter-certified device hardware that an OEM could drop into a switch, plug, or sensor with a one-week integration cycle. This was supported under the TCoE grant.
Planning
We standardised on a dual-radio module — Thread for the local mesh, Wi-Fi 6 for the cloud bridge — built around a Matter-pre-certified silicon platform. The reference firmware ships with the standard Matter device types pre-wired (on/off plug, dimmable light, contact sensor) so the OEM only needs to map a GPIO and pick a brand string.
Critically, the platform also bridges to our existing IEEE 802.15.4g sub-GHz mesh, so an OEM can offer a Matter-native premium SKU and a longer-range sub-GHz SKU from the same product family.
Testing
We carry a CSA Authorized Test Laboratory relationship for pre-scan, which lets us catch interop issues before submission. Every firmware drop is regression-tested against a Matter test harness with at least one controller from each major ecosystem (Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung) on the LAN.
RF coexistence between Thread (2.4 GHz) and Wi-Fi (2.4/5 GHz) was hard-tested with a bench-top spectrum analyser to make sure the Matter side does not stall when the Wi-Fi side is busy on backhaul.
