Cloud convenience has come at the cost of sovereignty. Photos, documents, surveillance footage, and operational data sit on servers the user does not control, in jurisdictions they did not choose. Existing self-hosted boxes are either tinker-grade NAS units or enterprise rack appliances — nothing in between for an Indian household, clinic, or small office.
We built Smritimegh — स्मृतिमेघ, the cloud of memory — as the missing middle: a quiet, low-power edge server that genuinely belongs to the buyer.
Planning
The hardware is an Octa-core ARM SoC with ECC memory, up to 5 NVMe and 6 SATA interfaces, cooled with a passive heatsink. Networking is 2.5 GbE.
The software stack is hardened Linux with a curated application catalogue — file sync, photo backup, VPN, DNS sinkhole, document collaboration — installed and updated through a single management UI. Identity is held on-device; nothing about a Smritimegh installation phones home unless the user enables remote support.
Testing
We ran 90-day soak tests with the application catalogue under continuous load (file sync, photo indexing, VPN, document editing) on three units in parallel. Power, thermals, and SSD wear were tracked the whole time; the units stayed within published spec.
Production
Smritimegh is shipped as a configured appliance — the buyer plugs in power and network, scans a setup QR, and runs through a 5-minute onboarding. Customers include privacy-conscious households, small clinics handling patient data under DPDP requirements, and organisations that simply want their files at home.
