Off-grid teams — search-and-rescue, expedition logistics, rural disaster response — need a tactical messaging mesh that does not depend on any infrastructure. Off-the-shelf LoRa modules cap at 14 to 20 dBm and stop working when terrain blocks the first hop. Existing higher-power solutions are bulky, hand-built, or export-restricted.
We took a Meshstatic-compatible approach so the node speaks to any other Meshstatic device in the field, then engineered the RF chain for a usable 29 dBm.
Planning
The PA stage allows sustained 29 dBm without backing off after a few packets. The matching network was tuned in-house to keep VSWR under 1.4 across the full 865–867 MHz Indian allocations, swappable by region at provisioning. The RF Front End also adds a +16dBm of LNA gain.
Power management is a 1700 mAh cell, with a graceful brown-out behaviour: as the cell drains, the node steps down its TX power instead of going silent.
Testing
Range trials happened over the Western Ghats with handheld nodes on ridge-line and valley positions. We confirmed 8 km line-of-sight at 29 dBm and 1.8 km through partial canopy, both within model. Thermal soak at 55 °C ambient confirmed the PA does not roll back duty cycle.
Regulatory testing covered the Indian sub-GHz band; the US version uses the 902–928 MHz allocation under FCC Part 15.
Production
Production ensures quality manufacturing RF testing with the antenna and PA module pre-tuned and locked before final assembly. Each node is range-tested against a reference station before it leaves the line, so field calibration is unnecessary.
The product will be sold as a finished node and as a reference design to integrators building their own off-grid solutions.
